The Committee would like to alert all members to an issue which is becoming a very serious concern. For many years it was a common practice to work extra hours early in your work week in exchange for taking off early on the final day of your work cycle. Many employees did so without documentation from supervision and this seldom resulted in discipline. However, times have changed, and the BNSF is, unfortunately, a different railroad than it once was. There have been several incidents in recent history of employees being disciplined harshly for trading time and the Committee would like to discourage members from continuing to engage in this practice. At a minimum, never do so without the knowledge and consent of your supervisor. If at all possible, do not rely on his/her verbal acknowledgement; get it in writing! Most importantly, always be sure your hours of service entries match the hours you worked. Jeopardizing one’s career to get home a few hours earlier is just not worth the risk.
